High modulus bitumens to extend the durability of the surface applied in the repair of runways at the Madrid Adolfo Suárez-Barajas Airport

Between September and November 2015, repair work was performed on various runways of the Madrid Adolfo Suárez-Barajas Airport, specifically those identified as A18, A19, A20, M18, M19 and M20, corresponding to surface rehabilitation actions and in which Repsol has participated as supplier of the different binders used.

The repair work project, awarded to the company Vías y Construcciones and executed by Eiffage Infraestructuras, consisted of the removal and replacement of the surface on different layers of bituminous mixture for a thickness of 15.7 in (40 cm), with a total action surface of 92,500 ft2 (8,600 m2).

The National Scrap Tire Plan indicates public works as an instrument for recycling rubber dust from STs, as a constituent material of some binders used in the manufacture of bituminous mixtures, provided that it is technically and economically possible. Therefore, Repsol Asphalts developed a wide range of bitumens with STs included in C.O. 21/2007 (detailed and extended with C.O. 21 bis/2009) that help to meet that need.

Said bitumens (known as green asphalts) are developed using Repsol's own technology and which basically consists of mixing the base bitumen and crumb rubber under conditions such as to enable the complete dispersal of the crumb rubber in the bitumen. This dispersion must also be stable.

Asphalt mixtures for road surfaces manufactured using our rubber bitumens make it possible to obtain technical advantages such as: less acoustic impact on reducing noise levels when vehicles drive over the surface and greater adherence. They also contribute to solving the major environmental problem of the accumulation of scrap tires in landfills: reuse of over 10,000 tons of tires annually, which contributes to minimizing this environmental liability.

In short, these bitumens make it possible to obtain more efficient and environmentally friendly asphalt mixtures, thereby meeting society's needs.
