What is renewable hydrogen?

Renewable hydrogen is an energy vector derived from renewable sources that has zero CO₂ emissions. The use of hydrogen in conjunction with low-carbon liquid fuels is essential for decarbonization.

How do we produce renewable hydrogen?

There are many ways to produce renewable hydrogen. One of the most common technologies used is eletrolysis from water, which is a process involving the separation of the water molecule in hydrogen and oxygen by applying renewable electric energy, but there are other alternatives. At Repsol, we produce it from solar energy and using biomethane.

Through solar energy

We created a system, along with Enagás, to obtain renewable hydrogen through solar energy, which allows us to reduce the carbon footprint up to 90% compared to the conventional process of reforming methane.

The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, the University of Alicante, and the Aragon and Magrana Hydrogen Foundation are among the entities that collaborate with us on this project.

From biomethane

The biomethane used as raw material was obtained from municipal solid waste. By doing so, we continue to promote the circular economy and cutting-eduge technology to transform waste into low-carbon, value-added products.

In this way, we take a first step toward substituting conventional natural gas for sustainable biomethane to produce renewable hydrogen in our industrial facilities and that way decarbonize both our processes and our products.

Main uses of hydrogen

Renewable hydrogen will be used to produce synthetic fuels, conventional fuels, and in the long term it could also be used to supply the demand for hydrogen in the mobility industry.

Mobility

It's used as raw material for producing carbon-neutral synthetic fuels. Also, fuel cell vehicles powered by hydrogen are one of the options to mainly decarbonize heavy-duty road transportation.

Industry

Hydrogen is a key component in our refining processes as it's used as raw material.

Renewable energy storage

It can be used to store renewable electricty surplus on a large scale when supply exceeds demand. This makes it possible to use the stored energy later on.
